It could be said that patriotism affects politics the same way religion affects spirituality. Neither patriotism nor religion are physical entities, and are easily manipulated and interpreted to "prove" virtually anything.
Loyalty can never be demanded, it must be earned. This is a naturally occurring process. Any attempts to force or influence any types of loyalty should be rejected.
Loyalty is a close cousin to insecurity.
