A Look @ Drinking & Driving

Drunk driving happens all the time. It seems neither safe to decriminalize it, nor effective to simply criminalize it. The current solution has been to monitor traffic for signs of bad driving and act accordingly. It's lack of effectiveness at eliminating the problem is made obvious by it's lack of deterrent capability. It's silly to imagine a day where every intoxicated person stops believing that they're 'fine' or 'not too drunk to handle it' and starts heading home.

Also, many people do it. Studies show that the likelihood of an intoxicated person getting caught is very slim.

Local governments should establish organizations set up to allow for a free ride home from the bar, and available 24 hours a day. Criminalizing the behavior straight out would now seem an effective compromise to the potential danger of DUI. As long as their was an easy, free alternative to getting home, there's no reason to drink and drive.

To criminalize a behavior after the fact, while ignoring solutions to prevent it, is law best suited in oppressive societies where enforcement is favored over efficiency.
